Viking kit
There are a couple of distinct elements to making a viking or dark ages style kit. And while I will be using the term Viking throughout this article it also refers to Anglo-Saxon or other similar cultures. Like any form of costume you want to have layers and accessories but particular types help. This article is aiming for a more historical influence than fantasy. I find that making a good fantasy costume is a hell of a lot harder to do without looking like "a computer game character". There are always ways to embellish a character from the base but it is a good idea to have the base to work from.

The super basic version would be baggy pants, tunic and a belt. This is pretty easy to do for soft kit. A standard keyhole neck tunic is very good at establishing the style.
From there you can add things like leg wraps, hood and jewelry. Another thing I like doing is having a long sleeve tunic under a shorter tunic to create layers and colour contrast.
As you can see from the picture to the left, basic soft kit can be very effective not to mention very warm and comfortable if made out of wool.

In terms of fighting kit things are pretty easy. Maille hauberk or haubergeon for body armour and a spectacled helm or spangenhelm are the default. Weapon wise straight sword (many companies make swords with a viking styled handle) and large round shield and a saex as a backup. Another iconic weapon is the dane axe.
The idea of iconic combinations are important for two reasons one it creates an immediate connection in the minds of anyone looking at your kit. This is especially important if you are looking at having a group with the same background in game. The other reason is that it gets further away from the 'special snowflake' syndrome that many players find annoying.
For female civilian wear the apron dress is a great option especially with brooches it creates a good look. For female military/fighting look I'd go with exactly what the men would wear.
In terms of places to get kit like this here are a couple of options.
